Moose Jaw

Located on the Moose Jaw River in south-central Saskatchewan is the municipality of Moose Jaw. The residents of the city fondly call themselves as Moose Javians. To the east of the city, about 77 kilometers away, is Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan. Regina is easily accessible by the Trans-Canada Highway, that conveniently runs right through the municipality of Moose Jaw. The municipality of Moose Jaw is recognized as being tourist and retirement friendly.

Originally, the municipality was named "Moose Jaw Bone Creek" by John Palliser in the year 1857. There are two common theories concerning how Palliser chose a name. The first theory is that, when looking at a map, the shape of the Moose Jaw River resembles the jaw of a moose. The second is that the name is derived from the Plains Cree name "moscastani-sipiy", which means a "a warm place by the river." The Coteau Range provides the river valley with protection from the weather conditions. The Plains Cree word Moose Jaw translates to "warm breezes".

Although the city has served mainly as an industrial centre, the Snowbirds of Canada's military air show flight demonstration team is located within the municipality. The business district within the municipality has lots of stunning historical murals painted on the exterior of several buildings. The municipality of Moose Jaw likewise serves as a railway junction for the agricultural produce of the area. Some of the small grain elevators which formerly lined the highway are being replaced by huge capacity concrete grain terminals. Because the technology becomes more advanced in the areas of transport, road construction and harvest, large inland terminals have become more economically viable. Because of the cities nearness to the Trans-Canada Highway. some meat-processing plants, salt, potash, anhydrous ammonia, urea fertilizer and ethanol producers could be situated near Moose Jaw.

In the municipality of Moose Jaw, there are some main places of interest, including the Temple Garden's Mineral Spa, the Tunnels of Moose Jaw and the History of Transportation Western Development Museum. Trolley tours of the municipality are still offered by Moose Jaw Trolley Company, which has been existing since the year 1912. Just outside of the city of Moose Jaw are the roadside attractions of Moose family, Mac the Moose and Capone's car. Other highlights of the municipality of Moose Jaw are CFB Moose Jaw, that is a NATO flight training school, and the geothermal spa.

Moose Jaw No. 161 is the governing body of Moose Jaw. Approximately 1,228 inhabitants, including those from the nearby Canadian Forces Base, depend on their services.

Even if there is only one indoor shopping centre situated in the municipality, the Town 'N' Country Mall, there are several independent retailers and grocery stores which operate in Moose Jaw. Examples of these consist of Co-Op, the Real Canadian Superstore, Safeway Inc, Giant Tiger, Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart, The Brick, Sobeys, Staples, MKarr's Furniture, Mark's Work Warehouse, Shoppers Drug mart, London Drugs, PartSource, Dollar Giant, Liquidation World, Home Hardware, Peavey Mart, Castle Building Centres Group and Western Lumber, and Liquidation World.
