Flint is a city in Michigan State. It is situated 66 miles or 106 km northwest of Detroit. The U.S. Census Bureau recorded the population during 2010 to be 102,434, making the city of Flint the 7th largest city within the state. Flint serves as the county seat of Genesee County. This occupies the Flint/Tri-Cities region of the state of Michigan. In addition, the county of Genesee is the entirety of Flint's metropolitan region and is the 4th largest metropolitan region within Michigan state. In 2010 the population of the area was around 425,800.
Flint was founded in 1819, by Jacob Smith, a prominent Detroit fur trader. The site was an ideal site for a stopover on the overland route between the city of Detroit and Saginaw. It grew quickly into a small sized village. The settlement became incorporated as the city of Flint in the year 1855. The name was chosen from the river running through the region. The city of Flint established itself as a lumber center during the latter half of the 19th century. As the century drew to a close the city of Flint was able to leverage its lumbering infrastructure into a burgeoning carriage-manufacturing industry. Flint soon became known as "Vehicle City," since it became the world's largest carriage-making center. The city of Flint was in the forefront of the new automobile trade when horse-drawn carriages gave way to the arrival of automobiles.
General Motors Corporation was founded by William C. Durant in 1908. The automobile manufacturing and assembly quickly prospered into a big industry.
