Salinas

Salinas is presently the largest city in Monterey County with a population of 148,350 and is situated just eight miles from the Pacific Ocean. The mouth of the Salinas River lies about 10 miles west-northwest from the city. It is around 52 feet above sea level. This suburban city has the nickname of "Salad Bowl of the United States" as 80 percent of all the lettuce produced in the states is produced here.

There are many types of homes in the city for all the levels of income. Salinas has everything from luxury homes to low level apartments, that depends on the area.

Due to the extremely mild climate, the floral industry along with vineyards thrive here. The city is recognized for its agricultural focus. It was even the birthplace of John Steinbeck, who has since won a Nobel Prize in Literature. A lot of his novels were inspired or set within the city.

The average temperature during summertime is around seventy degrees Fahrenheit, which lowers to around 50 degrees Fahrenheit at nighttime. Winter is roughly ten degrees lower, with an average of 60 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the day and thirty degrees Fahrenheit at night. The precipitation averages roughly 14.4 inches of rain each and every year.

The economy is split with approximately 54.6% of jobs being blue collar and 45.4% white collar. The top two occupation sectors are sales and office (24 percent) and profession, management, and related occupations (21.4%), Following that are farming, fishing and forestry (14.4%) and transportation, production and material moving occupations (14.4%). Merely 9.1% of the population worked in construction and maintenance. However, numerous people believe this number is skewed. These numbers do not include farm workers who migrate and work for around nine months of the year.

Local agriculture companies, like for instance Tanimura & Antle, D'Arrigo Bros. and Taylor Farms hire a large percent of the population, as do various companies such as HSBC and Fresh Express.
