Daly City

Daly City, called the "Gateway to the Peninsula", is located on San Mateo County's northern edge. The city limits stretch from the San Fransisco bay (to the east) all the way to the Pacific Ocean (on the west). It is conveniently situated in the middle of two of the largest job growth parts in California, the San Mateo and San Fransisco counties. Though the financial system in the area is really diverse, the major sectors are within retail, healthcare, and small company.

The economy is largely dependent on the retail sector. Daly City has three main shopping places within its limits, the biggest being Serramonte Center with a total of 860,000 square feet dedicated to retail space. The Mission Street retail corridor, that borders San Francisco, and the Westlake shopping centre (that provides 620,000 square feet of retail space) are the two other main regional shopping places. The city has more than 3.1 million square feet of retail space, and out of all the cities in the county Daly City has the largest taxable retail sales.

The next largest sector within Daly City's economy is in the medical industry. The biggest employer within the city is Seton Medical Center, who has approximately 1,500 staff. There are 357 beds within the hospital, and it holds the reputation for being amongst the top medical facilities within the U.S. There are some other medical institutions in the area, like the Physician's Medical Center, San Francisco Heart Institute, San Francisco Neuro-Skeletal Imaging Center, Spine Care Medical Group and Seton Medical Office. The newest facility in the area is the Kaiser Permanente, that has 130,000 square feet of medical clinics and offices. It could be located at 395 Hickey Boulevard near the I-280.

Due to the closeness of educational institutes, the people from the area tend to be well educated. There are six colleges or universities in a ten mile radius and another 12 more educational institutes can be found in a 50-mile radius.

The population of Daly City is mostly over the age of eighteen, 78% with the median age being approximately 35. Surprisingly, only 12 percent of the population is more than sixty. Almost 50 percent of the total labor force work in local jobs.
