With a population of 3,792,621 during the year 2010, Los Angeles in the state of California was the 2nd most populous city within the nation following New York City. It is also the most densely inhabited city in California. Los Angeles is situated in the southern portion of the state and has a total land area of 468.67 square miles or 1,213.8 km2. The city's metro area is considered the 2nd largest in the United States, with over 14,000,000 individuals within an area larger than Maine. Around 30 of LA's suburbs have populations with more than 80,000 people. There are people from more than 140 countries around the globe living there. LA enjoys a multi-cultural society and is home to the largest Latin-American and Asian-American populations of any city in the USA.

The city has been referred to as the City of Angels, and is a leading center for worldwide media, trade, education, science, fashion, culture, technology and media. There are plenty of institutions that call Los Angeles home and provide a broad and renowned range of cultural and professional fields. It is among the most substantial economic engines within the United States. Los Angeles has been ranked the 3rd richest city in the globe. It is the 5th most influential and powerful city in the world, coming in only behind the city of New York within the States.

The city of LA features 7 Fortune 500 company headquarters, including Reliance Steel & Aluminum, a metals distributor; AECOM, an engineering firm; CB Richard Ellis and Tutor Perini, a builder forming a real estate group; Northrop Grumman, an aerospace contractor and Occidental Petroleum, an energy company; and Health Net, a healthcare provider.

The economy in the city is driven by the entertainment city like for example: television programs, video games, motion pictures and recorded music. Technology, aerospace, petroleum, finance, media production, healthcare, law, transportation and telecommunications are amongst the other dominant businesses. Other basis of the economy consist of apparel, fashion and tourism.

The Port of Los Angeles is situated in San Pedro. It is situated around 32 km or 20 miles south of Downtown within the San Pedro neighborhood. It is also known as WorldPort LA or Los Angeles Harbor. The port connects the separate Port of Long Beach. The port complex takes up 7500 acres or 30 km2 of water and land along 43 miles or 69 km of water front.
