Manchester

Manchester, New Hampshire is the biggest city within the state and the biggest city in northern New England. Northern New England comprises the states of Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. It is New England's 10th biggest city and is located in Hillsborough County along the banks of Merrimack River. This river divides the city of Manchester into the eastern and western sections. Manchester is located near the northern end of the Northeast megalopolis. Manchester had a population of about 109,560 during the U.S. Census of the year 2010. This number was the most out of any city within New England north of Boston, including the cities in Massachusetts.

In the 1670s, colonists settled within the city of Manchester. At that time, it was mainly a farming community. The area was named after the English city of Manchester. The region was rich in lots of resources for lumber, textiles and paper because of the various rivers and brooks within the region. Eventually, Manchester developed into an industrial township. During the year 1783, it was initially incorporated as part of East Hartford. During the year 1823, it was later incorporated as a separate town. During 1838, the world's biggest silk mill was established here.

In the beginning, the city of Manchester was very dependent on the textile business. There are over 200 manufacturing businesses in Manchester that specialize in a variety of fields.
