Manchester, New Hampshire is the biggest city within the state and the biggest city in northern New England. Northern New England comprises the states of Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. It is New England's 10th biggest city and is located in Hillsborough County along the banks of Merrimack River. This river divides the city of Manchester into the eastern and western sections. Manchester is located near the northern end of the Northeast megalopolis. Manchester had a population of about 109,560 during the U.S. Census of the year 2010. This number was the most out of any city within New England north of Boston, including the cities in Massachusetts.
In the 1670s, colonists settled within the city of Manchester. At that time, it was mainly a farming community. The area was named after the English city of Manchester.
