Trois-Rivieres

Trois-Rivieres is a city situated in the Mauricie region of the province of Quebec within Canada. The city of Trois-Rivieres is located at the convergence of the Saint Lawrence and Saint-Maurice Rivers. The city of Trois-Rivieres is found in the Mauricie administrative area on the north coast of the Saint Lawrence River. It lies across from the city of Becancour.

The city of Trois-Rivieres is an area considered to be part of the densely inhabited Quebec City-Windsor Corridor. This stretches roughly halfway between Quebec City and Montreal. Trois-Rivieres was founded on July 4, 1634 and was the second permanent settlement in New France, following Quebec City was founded during the year 1608. The city forms the cultural and economic center of the Mauricie area.

"Trois Rivieres" translates in English to three rivers, that is derived from Saint Maurice River's three mouths as it is divided by 2 small islands when it reaches the Saint Lawrence River. Originally, Trois-Rivieres was known as to in English as Three Rivers. In recent decades, the name has been accustomed to be Trois-Rivieres in both English and French. The Anglicized version of the name still is found in numerous places around town, bearing witness to the influence of English settlers in the area. "Trifluviens" is the name given to the town's inhabitants.

For a lot of years, the area was frequented by Algonquins and Abenakis who utilized the location as their summer stomping place. Jacques Cartier, the French explorer described the site during the year 1535 upon his 2nd journey to the New World. It was Captain Dupont-Grave who actually used the name "Trois-Rivieres during the year 1599 and during 1601, the name initially appeared on the maps of the region.

The first foundry established in the city was during 1738, making it the oldest industrial city within the country. The forge produced iron for nearly 150 years, with a lot of the iron utilized to make the Royal Navy ship. In 1818, the very first port facility was constructed near rue Saint-Antoine, and presently handles 2.5 million tons of cargo on a yearly basis. During the year 1879, the very first railway was constructed to be able to support the region's growing lumber industry.

Trois-Rivieres has been establishing technology parks and trying to revitalizing industrialization in the area. The city is taking advantage of its central location to both Montreal and the city of Quebec, along with its university and port. An example of the new economy is Marmen Incorporated. They employ 1000 people between operations within Matane and the city of Trois-Rivieres and are responsible for manufacturing wind turbine towers.

The city's leading businesses consist of metal transformation, thermoplastics, electronics, cabinet making and the production of food crops. Adjoining the Trois-Rivieres Airport is an industrial park which serves as major centre for the aeronautical industry.
