Pembroke Pines

Pembroke Pines (population 154,750) is a city within Florida State, on the southern Atlantic Coast. It is the second biggest city in the County of Broward. The city of Pembroke Pines is located halfway between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. The city is the 9th biggest city in the state of Florida.

The area was first settled by the American Indians over 4,000 years ago, or longer. There has been some archaeological proof found within Broward County that dates back over 10,000 years. It is assumed that the name Pembroke originated from an early British landowner named the Earl of Pembroke. Pembroke Pines, that wasn't incorporated until the year 1960, is located along Pembroke Road. The area is characterized by numerous pine trees.

Pembroke Pines is located within an easy distance from two seaports and two airports: Port Everglades, the Port of Miami, the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and the Miami International Airport. The highway US 27 gives access to Lake Okeechobee and to various areas in the state of Florida.

The city of Pembroke Pines is part of the South Florida metropolitan area and is near numerous famous attractions like The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, The Broward Museum of Discovery & Science, The IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum in Dania Beach, The Calder Race Course, The South Broward Ballet Theater, The Pembroke Pines Historical Museum and The Pembroke Pines Theater of Performing Arts. A wetland park is planned for US 27 and Sheridan Street. Within nearby city of Fort Lauderdale are The Miami-Hollywood Motorsports Park, The Museum of Art and The International Swimming Hall of Fame.

The economy of the city is quite similar to that of the majority of other South Florida cities which are mainly dependent upon tourism. The median family income within the city was $69,267 in the year 2005, higher than both the Florida average ($50,465) and the national average ($55,832). Since the year 1992, subdivisions of the city have expanded significantly west of Interstate 75, in West Pines. This development has happened following Hurricane Andrew.
