Irving is a busy city situated within the Irving-Dallas-Plano division of the Arlington-Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. As of 2010, the cities population is estimated to be 216,290. Amongst the first master-planned developments of the US, the Las Colinas area, is located within the city. It is spread out over 12,000 acres and was once the biggest mixed-use development within the Southwest. The Mustangs at Las Colinas, the biggest horse sculpture in the globe, is located in this region. The Irving Convention Center was established in Las Colinas in January 2011. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is also in Irving city limits.
The region was initially inhabited during the early 1850's with the city being established by J.O. Schulze and Otis Brown during the year 1902. There were several other smaller communities which existed withnin the region, such as Sowers, Kit Shady Grove, Union Bower, Finley, Estelle and Bear Creek, but they were all merged together to form the city of Irving in 1903. On April 14, the year 1914 the city of Irving was officially incorporated.
The two original founders of the city were both employed by the Rock Island, Gulf and Chicago Railway. After arriving within the area to survey a railroad route between the city of Dallas and the city of Fort Worth in 1902, they acquired the 80 acres which the British Family owned and started to build the city. On December 19, the year 1903 the first town lots were bought at a public auction. In 1904, the post office from Kit was relocated to Irving.

Forest City Enterprises, which is the lead developer on the project, is presently rehabilitating the Mercantile complex located within Dallas. They plan to renovate it into a Rockefeller Centre-style multiple-use project.
