The oldest naval base west of Mississippi used to be located on Mare Island. Ever since its decommission in the year 1996, new houses have been built and planned on it's previous location. Touro University, that is located on the island's south side, is planning on opening a state of the art cancer research facility. One economic plan of Vallejo is to revitalize Mare Island, which will be done by the construction of new neighborhoods. There is a lot of rich history as well as an abundance of national historic landmarks situated here, none the least of which is the one of the nations oldest decommissioned shipyard and naval bases. Along with these, there is also a 19th century brick industrial warehouse and some coal shed artist studios. A couple of other notable historic landmarks are the Chapel park, Officers mansions and Alden Park (designated historic landscapes), and the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi. Finally, the Saint Peters Chapel, that was built during 1901, houses the biggest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany's stain-glass windows.
