Ontario is a gorgeous city situated in San Bernardino County, California. Originally from Canada, George Chaffey, who was an engineer, established the Ontario Model Colony development during 1882. The city was named after the province Ontario, Canada, by George, William, and Charles Chaffey. It is the 18th largest city in Southern California with a population of about 170,373 individuals.
The economy of Ontario was historically shaped because of it having a reputation as a health resort. The local farmers planted orange and lemon groves, as they thrived within the cities rocky soil. Vintners and olive also were attracted to the city. One of the cities historical landmarks is The Graber Olive House, which is still in business today. One more business which is still popular is Dairy farming.
The La/Ontario International airport, which is situated within Ontario, is considered to be the 15th busiest cargo airport in the United States. The city is well situated to deal with most freight traffic from the Long Beach and Los Angeles ports. Ontario is the home of Ontario Mills and used to be the home of Ontario Motor Speedway until it was demolished in nineteen eighty.
Before the war, the General Electric plant was a main trade in the area. A huge influx of settlers caused in part by the expansion of the Southern California defense industry, made Ontario their home all through and after WWII.
As the manufacturing industry declined within the area; the financial system of Ontario is currently dominated by warehousing and service industries. Today, the most notable manufacturing business is the Maglite co-corporation, makers of flashlights. The New Model Colony idea which the city has created plans to take southern Ontario, that is presently an area dominated by agricultural farming and dairy farms, and turn it into a variety of residential homes, town centers, and business and industrial parks.
The famous Stars and Straps clothing company was founded in Ontario.
