Nashville

Nashville, Tennessee is the state capital and also serves as the county seat of Davidson County. Nashville is located within the Southeastern USA along the Cumberland River. The City of Nashville has earned its status as a center for the music industry. There are also a large number of colleges and universities situated there. It is the state's 2nd largest city, aside from Memphis.

The consolidated city-county government in the City of Nashville includes all of Nashville in addition to smaller municipalities in a two-tier system. With more than 1.5 million inhabitants, it is the largest Metropolitan Statistical Area in Tennessee. The area is a center for health care, banking, publishing and transportation.

The area was originally inhabited by a group of Wataugans, frontier settlers in the year 1779. The Watauguns set up their very own autonomous government and called the settlement Fort Nashborough in honor of Francis Nash, who was an American Revolutionary War Hero. Nashville rapidly grew in importance because of its port on the river, and later its accessibility through railway. Nashville was incorporated as a city in 1806 and became the county seat. In 1843 it was named capital of the state.

The extensive university community helps provide cultural life benefits for Nashville. The university has been influential within the city as well as nationally. The Fugitives and the Agrarians were two groups of poets and literary scholars who were connected with Vanderbilt University during the early part of the 20th century and had a major impact on culture.

Another vital industry in Nashville is the tourism industry, especially with the city's history in the Civil War. Two popular attractions comprise Fort Nashborough, a reconstruction based on the original settlement, and Fort Negley, which is a Civil War battle fort that has been semi-restored. The city is the site of a full-scale replica of the Greek Parthenon. Historic architecture consists of the Tennessee State Capitol buildings and The Hermitage, an historic presidential home open to the public.

Known as "Music City", the City of Nashville is well-known for its vibrant music scene. A main venue is the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. Cultural organizations include the Tennessee Repertory Theater, the Nashville Opera, the Music City Drum and Bugle Corps and the Nashville Ballet. The symphony has its headquarters within the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.
