Fayetteville is a city within the south-central part of North Carolina and the location of Fort Bragg. The city is around an hour from Raleigh City, the capital of the state. Fayetteville serves as the county seat of Cumberland County.
Situated about twelve miles northwest of Fayetteville City is the important U.S. Army installation called Fort Bragg. There are thousands of select paratroopers who are deployed from there on missions around the globe. Originally a field artillery base in WWI, Fort Bragg became the training ground for the country's Airborne Divisions in World War II.
There are numerous major streets going through the city of Fayetteville, including Interstates I-95 and I-295, U.S. Routes 13, 301, and 401, and North Carolina State Highways 53, 87 and 24. The city is serviced by a local airport with flights to Charlotte, Atlanta and Philadelphia, amongst other cities.
Immigrants from Scotland initially settled within the area of Fayetteville during the year 1739. During the year 1783, the early Cross Creek and Campbellton settlements merged to form Fayetteville. The name of the town was utilized to honor a Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette. Formerly the capital of North Carolina (1789-1793), Fayetteville lost out to the city of Raleigh in its efforts to become the permanent capital of the state.
