Beaumont City is situated in the Beaumont-Port Arthur Metropolitan statistical area and currently has a population of around 118,000. It is county seat of Jefferson County and with the cities of Orange and Port Arthur it creates the Golden Triangle, which is an important industrial area on the Gulf Coast.
Beaumont City sits approximately 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico and is located on the coastal plane south of the dense pine forests of East Texas. On the east border of the city is the Neches River and on the north border is the Pine Island Bayou. Originally, the city of Beaumont was criss-crossed by several small streams but as the city developed the majority of them were filled or converted for drainage purposes. Trinity Island is located directly across from Riverfront Park, and the other three islands around the downtown part are named Harbor, Smith, and Clark.
During 1824, Noah and Nancy Tevis first settled in the area when they built a farm on the west bank of the Neches River. A small community started to grow all-around the farm utilizing the name of Tevis Bluff or Neches River Settlement. Thomas B. Huling, Henry Millard and Joseph P. Pulsifer obtained the small community along with the nearby community of Santa Anna in the year 1835 with the intention of planning a town. It was named after the late wife of henry Millard, Mary Dewburleigh Barlace Warren Beaumont, who passed away in the year 1834.
Lamar University is located in the city and currently hosts roughly 15,000 students. The Beaumont Enterprise is the city's daily newspaper, and The Examiner is published once a week.
The Beaumont Port represents a significant part of the financial system. The port is the second largest military seaport within the globe and is currently the largest seaport by Tonnage. Stationed at the port are both the 842d transportation Battalion and the 596th Transportation Group.
In the city of Beaumont, there are some companies which have their head offices here. Conn's Appliances and Jason's Deli are currently among the largest. The Sweet Leaf Tea Company head office was initially located in the city but relocated to Austin during the month of October the year 2003. Until it's absorption by Entergy Corporation during the year 1993, Gulf States Utilities also had its head office there. GSU's Edison Plaza remains the tallest building in Beaumont City.
Ever since the year 1907, Beaumont City has hosted the South Texas State fair and has recently relocated this exhibition to a new location within Ford Park.
In Beaumont City, the top employers comprise Conn's Appliances Inc, Beaumont Independent School District, Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital and Memorial Hermann Baptists Hospital.
