The company Potain was established in La Clayette, France in the year 1928. Ever since that time, the company has grown into a leading manufacturer of cranes. The company is responsible for more than 100,000 cranes in operation all-around the world. Currently, the company makes over 60 models from various production plants in France, China, Portugal, Germany and Italy. The business represents many different product ranges designed for a variety of applications. These machinery are sold through an international Manitowoc dealer network.

The family of Potain cranes are divided into different tower crane families. The smallest cranes manufactured by Potain are the self-erecting cranes. These cranes vary from 1 ton to 7.98 ton capacity. The next size up is the top-slewing cranes which are bigger and higher. These cranes vary from 7.98 to 64 tons. Moreover, these are the biggest special application cranes which are custom-designed. These units provide a reach capacity of 160 tons.

The company's top innovations consist of LLC range of hoists, the Vision Cab and the Dialog control system. The growing reputation of the company has expanded their appeal with various models. Potain cranes are usually found on conventional construction sites, bridge building projects, power stations, ship-building projects and shipbuilding yards.

Two of Manitowac's largest facilities are based within the US. Their manufacturing facility is based within the state of Wisconsin. In this state, both the tower crane parts and crawler cranes are made within the state of Pennsylvania inside the Shady Grove facility. Here boom trucks and mobile cranes are manufactured. Regional offices are located in Brazil and within Mexico. Furthermore, the extensive dealer network located throughout the United States and Ontario offers support and coverage unrivalled by any other crane producer.
